A question many people have when they first decide to use cloth is should they be purchasing multiple brands or styles. A popular answer is yes especially if you aren’t sure what you are after or if you are still yet to have baby.

These days there is an abundance of cloth nappy brands and styles, it feels like just about every week or so a new one is popping up so it’s hard to know where to start. We are also privileged to have the technology and access to social media to have a whole host of answers to what nappies people like most personally but we have to remember what someone else swears by may not suit our baby or be what we are after ourselves. I’ve always said if you can’t have a demo or don’t have someone you know who uses cloth to show you a variety of brands and styles then you are best off purchasing or hiring a mixture to see what best suits you and your baby.

Purchasing a variety or a trial pack will allow you to have access to a mixture of brands and you may or may not continue to use a mixture or you may be swayed in to using just one brand. If you purchase a trial pack or mixture of styles you may decide that you prefer one over the other e.g. you might prefer an All in One over an All in Two or a pocket over a snap in, the thing is if you are completely new to cloth you might not know this until you do try them. Just like people have preference over the style of underwear they wear we can develop preferences over the type of nappy we use.

A variety of nappies will also mean you have access to different styles as you baby grows and develops. Babies are never always going to be the same shape and size and throughout personal experience I have found this to be very true. Even babies from the same family with the same parents can be very different shapes and sizes, something that happened here. I made the mistake of purchasing a bulk lot of the same brand of mcn’s after trying one and while they worked for a while and I still made them work as needed there were times they weren’t the best fit or the most absorbent and if I wasn’t committed to just using cloth I would have probably given up. However it took me getting a couple of different brands to realise that I could get a better fit and some worked better at different times then others due to fit and absorbency.

Using cloth nappies is not hard but it can sometimes be a lot of trial and error and having a variety of brands will make this easier. This also means possibly having a mixture of front snaps, side snaps, OSFM, sized, fitteds, prefolds etc. You may also like to try out a few different features like double leg gussets, tummy elastics, back elastics, rise snap OSFM, OSFM without rise snaps, Velcro closure or snap closure and having a variety of brands or purchasing a trial pack will allow you to do this.

Finally if your just completely stuck on where to start on your journey or what you want a trial pack is definitely the way to go. We can make one up for you, you can purchase a ready made one or make your own by choosing 3 or more nappies from our range for a discount. Probably the easiest thing to do is choose your favourite colour or print if your completely undecided and start from there as if something is aesthetically pleasing we are more likely to use it.

Why shop with a retailer?

Why purchase from a multi brand retailer?

You may be wondering why would I purchase from a multi brand retailer and not just from an individual brands website?

There are many benefits to purchasing cloth nappies from an authorised retailer especially when starting out or not sure what you want.

Firstly retailers often carry a range of brands allowing you to purchase a range of options in the one place. There are so many brands and styles available currently that being able to purchase a few different ones at once helps you to figure out what works best for you and your baby. It will also save you on postage as you will be able to order the range all in one order.

Secondly if your not sure what your after most retailers will be able to help you work out what will work for you based on your needs and circumstances. This advice will be unbiased as retailers are not brand aligned and most have used the brands they carry themselves. Many like us will also offer free consultations or demos to let you view a range of nappies in person before committing as we understand how hard these things can be to decide sometimes by just looking at pictures online. Retailers like myself are also always up for a chat about cloth and personally I love helping people find what will work for them.

Thirdly retailers are able to design trial packs with a range of brands to suit your needs. While you can purchase trial packs from just about any brand that includes enough to get you started or their different styles a trial pack from a retailer will contain a range of brands and styles. This is especially helpful when you are just starting out and not sure what you want or what will suit your baby. These packs are also handy for people who just want a variety and not the same brand in their collection. I’ve always personally found it handy to have different brands and styles for different times and shapes of babies.

Fourthly shopping with a retailer not only helps keep 1 small business going but also the brands. The cloth nappy world is full of mum and dad run businesses that rely on the support of consumers to provide for their families. When you shop with a retailer and they restock with a brand both businesses benefit. Shopping small with a retailer also means more personalised service and every purchase definitely demands a happy dance here and is very much appreciated.

Finally one of the biggest deciding factors and benefits for many is the savings on postage. Many retailers as well as stocking a variety of brands also stock a range of other eco friendly and baby products so you can shop in one place and not pay multiple postage costs.

So next time your looking to add to your collection why not choose to purchase from a retailer. Let me know if there are any other reasons you shop with a retailer too.

If you want to check out some more swaps that can be made we have been posting daily on Instagram and Facebook a plastic free July post.

Now for our top 10 switches:

1. Use cloth nappies instead of disposables

2. Use stainless steel straws when needed and carry with us when out and about (a mini wetbag or cloth bag is easy to chuck these in).

3. Carry reusable cutlery when on the go to avoid having to use plastic.

4. Use reusable shopping bags including reusable fruit and veg bags like the ones we stock from ever eco.

5. Avoid cling wrap by using reusable food wraps, bags and food covers like those we stock from 4myearth.

6. Avoiding balloons when ever possible.

7. Using stainless steel drink bottles and carrying this anytime we go out of the house.

8. Using wetbags for wet swimmers, dirty clothes and dirty nappies so we don’t have to resort to plastic.

9. Buying baking supplies and herbs/spices from a bulk goods store so we can reuse our own jars.

10. Replacing plastic toothbrushes with bamboo and compostable toothbrushes.

The most important thing to remember is that we all can’t be perfect but we can all at least give it our best try.

This month marks 3 years since I took over ownership of Mumma Loves Bubba so thought it was time to revisit a little bit about who we are.

I am Samantha, a mum of 3 little ones who are currently 9, 5 and 2. As well as running this business I also run Cloth Nappies for Charity where I collect secondhand donations of nappies to loan to those in need in our local communities that want the option to choose Cloth but can’t always afford to. I am passionate about cloth use and changing habits away from single use to reduce our waste.

When my eldest was born it was always going to be Cloth that we used but we had planned on just using terry flats and covers (back then you could buy fleece velcro covers from Big W and Target). Budget was a big reason for us choosing cloth especially as I gave up my career to be at home with my baby (I am a trained primary school teacher and hold a masters degree in Teacher Librarianship). While in the early newborn phase I was researching Cloth more and fell down the rabbit hole of MCN’s (modern cloth nappies). I will admit that back then we didn’t have all the online forums that we do now, nor did there seem to be as much variety as there is now either. As I got further in to the Cloth world I discovered other ways that I could make changes to be more sustainable and reduce our waste as well as save money in the long term. I made the dive into reusable cloth menstrual pads for myself once my period returned as I was using reusable nursing pads as I found them so much more absorbent then the disposables of which I was going through a box every 2nd day in the early days. I also switched to reusable sandwich wraps, snack bags and food pouches along with stainless steel straws. It was also early on in our Cloth journey we started with a cheeky wipes kit and have never looked back. I also became more passionate about my vegetable garden (though not always having time for it) and worm farming for all our scraps. Hence the reason I try to incorporate reusables for the whole family in to our store.

Prior to purchasing Mumma Loves Bubba I was a consultant for another business selling cloth nappies and baby carriers in the Newcastle/Hunter region. I first started this in 2014 when pregnant with my 2nd and wanting to grow Cloth awareness in our local community as it was nowhere near the popularity I have seen it to be currently. Through this business I also held events for the Great Cloth Diaper Change and met many wonderful Cloth users. The opportunity to purchase Mumma Loves Bubba then came up in 2017 which I decided to take a big leap of faith and go for something I normally wouldn’t outside my comfort zone. It hasn’t always been easy, especially with a 3rd HG pregnancy thrown in to the mix not long after taking over followed by postnatal anxiety and another non sleeping reflux baby, but we are now finally growing and I hope to bring you more wonderful products as I can (even if this baby still doesn’t know how to sleep). I’m secretly hoping in this next year to be able to celebrate our 500th order as well.

We may be small in scopes of businesses out there but I hope our service is the best it can be as every single order we receive makes my day that little bit brighter. Here’s to another year of business.

To celebrate use code 3rdbirthday to receive free postage over $40 for the rest of November. (Code can only be used once per customer and not valid with any other codes).

The newest nappy to the Bubblebubs range is now here. It is a miniature version of the All In Two Bubblebubs Candie. The Bubblebubs Bo Peep is a newborn all in two that is designed to fit from around 2.5kg to approximately 8kg (weight range is only a guide). Just like the Candies it features the side snaps and a snap in trifold. The shell would also work well as a cover over Bambams or any newborn fitted nappy or over a prefold. Available in limited edition prints in both PUL and minky. The snaps also have an extra special featured B on them, just one of those finer details. I just wish I had a baby tiny enough to test these out on but without a doubt I’m sure they will work just as well as the Candies as the trifolds are exactly the same apart from size.

For a very limited time we also have a starter pack available that contains 3 BOpeeps and a double pocket Wetbag all for $89. The Bubblebubs Bo Peep is a newborn all in two that is designed to fit from around 2.5kg to approximately 8kg (weight range is only a guide).

Wow, time has certainly got away from me lately with all that is currently happening in the world. Along with not completing a blog post since February, Cloth nappy week has caught me unprepared even though I had originally started planning for it months ago.

April 20 - 26 mark the Australian Nappy Associations Cloth Nappy Week. A time to celebrate cloth nappies and raise awareness of cloth nappy use. It is also a time to share just how simple cloth can be. I did originally have a cloth nappy get together planned but due to restrictions this isn’t happening. There will however be a few virtual nappycinos being held through the Australian Nappy Association (unfortunately due to family I won’t be able to host one).

Now I thought I couldn’t let the week go by without having a little giveaway. I would love to see the cloth nappy love shared around Instagram and Facebook so get creative. Simply show your cloth love and tag mummalovesbubbaboutique on Instagram or post a photo on our Facebook page to be in a chance to win your choice of either a Seedling mini fit or multi fit nappy (choose from any in stock prints) plus a teeny tiny tote (explorer or tiger print). Be as creative as you can and we will collate all entries and draw a winner on Sunday 27th of April. Winner will be tagged in their post and announced on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Don’t forget to like our Facebook and Instagram pages as well. Giveaway is in no way sponsored, associated, administered or endorsed by Facebook or Instagram.

As well to celebrate we are giving you the chance to share choose between a discount or free postage. We are offering free postage on orders over $60 (excluding sale items) using the coupon clothcelebrationpost.
Or you can choose 10% off nappies and accessories using the coupon clothcelebration (excludes items currently on sale and value/trial packs). Only one coupon code can be used at a time and free postage can only be redeemed once per person.

Stay safe everyone.

Night Nappies - do I need a dedicated night nappy?

Have you tried night time cloth nappies? If not what is holding you back?

You don’t necessarily need a dedicated night nappy depending on what is already in your possession and how heavy a wetter your little one is. Most of the time if you have a younger baby or one who isn’t a heavy wetter you can get away with boosted day nappies. It may take a little experimenting and patience to find a solution that works best but hang in there. The key to a successful night nappy is generally an abundance of absorbency that is able to hold in lots of liquid for a longer amount of time. In order to work out what options may work look at materials that inserts are made of. Bamboo and hemp are highly absorbent and will last longer whilst microfibre is fast absorbing but tends to expel liquid faster as well as being prone to compression leaks hence the reason most night nappies are largely made up of bamboo fabrics.

If you have a lot of microfibre inserts at your disposal you can look at adding these in the pocket (they should never go directly against the skin as microfibre will dry the skin out) with either a bamboo or hemp insert or prefold such as the Rawr prefolds. Another option is purchasing night boosters from specific brands that can generally be used in most branded nappies. We carry a range from Baby Bare and Bubblebubs. Play around with the inserts and there positioning to see what combination works best for your baby but know that what may work at one stage may not work at another, these babies keep us on our toes.

Fitted nappies are a good option for night time as well because you can tailor the absorption to suit your little ones needs by adding inserts either in the nappy or between the nappy and cover. One of our favourite options for night fitteds here is either a Bamboo delight Or Honey pot teamed with a Bubblebubs night booster or baby bare night trifold. These work for us the best but the little one isn’t an overly heavy wetter for how much she feeds over night.

The last consideration is adding a cover, you can choose from either a PUL or wool cover. Personally we have always used PUL covers as that’s what works for us but wool covers are a widely chosen option that work wonderfully. Covers can be placed over boosted day nappies as well to help add an extra layer of wetness protection. The only downside you may find with a PUL cover is it may cause some friction marks depending on what it is paired with. Wool covers are an excellent option for heavy wetters if only using a day nappy as well.

The biggest thing to remember when working out a night option is to persevere, remain patient and if it turns out your little one is a heavy wetter and you have nothing at home that works perhaps try a dedicated night nappy. Don’t be alarmed either with the bulkiness of night nappies unless your little one shows signs of discomfort.

Good luck and please get in touch if you need any help at all.
